Film
- John Woo (Hong Kong)
- early avant-garde films e.g. Dead Knot (1969)
- known for martial arts / action movies: A Better Tomorrow (1986), The Killer (1989), Hard Boiled (1992)
- Once a Thief (1991) is classically, culturally comedic
- Sorry, Baby (2025) dir. Eva Victor
- Victor shadowed Jane Schoenbrun on set of I Saw the TV Glow (2024), the aesthetics of which heavily draw from ‘90s suburbs; Sorry, Baby pulls from the ‘00s and remote college towns. There is an early overhead shot of Agnes (Victor) and her best friend Lydie (Naomi Ackie) referencing Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004).
- Peter Hujar’s Day (2025) dir. Ira Sachs
- Sachs also directed Passages (2023) starring Adèle Exarchopoulos (Blue is the Warmest Colour) and Franz Rogowski; in Q&A at the Roxie, Sachs stressed that Peter Hujar’s Day is as much about Linda Rosenkrantz as it is Peter.
- Filmed in one apartment.
- After Hours (1985) dir. Martin Scorsese
- Scorsese (and Coppola) cite I Am Cuba (1964) dir. Mikhail Kalatozov as one of their filmmaking influences; there is a very famous shot in that film that pans up from the street, using pulleys and multiple cameramen, immersing the viewer in the action.
- Hal & Harper (2025, limited series); Cha Cha Real Smooth (2022) dir. Cooper Raiff
- Raiff manages to write and capture chemistry and history between many different characters - siblings, parents, close friends, romantic interests. He’s very good at striking a sharp balance between humor and drama. There is a memorable kitchen scene in Cha Cha Real Smooth between Andrew (Raiff) and Domino (Dakota Johnson). They have a heart-to-heart that is intimate in its depth and inherent randomness; they jump from topic to topic with a leisurely wit unique to Raiff’s writing.
